Wired or battery powered?
Wired doorbells and cameras never need charging and usually respond faster. Battery models are easier to place anywhere, but you will need to recharge them every few months. If you already have a doorbell, a wired video doorbell can often use the existing wiring.
Make sure your Wi-Fi reaches
Cameras stream a lot of video. A weak signal at the front door or in the backyard leads to lag, missed alerts and blurry footage. Test your Wi-Fi where each camera will go, and plan for a range extender or mesh system if needed.
Plan your camera placement
- Front door and porch for packages and visitors
- Driveway and garage for vehicles
- Back door and side gates, the most common entry points
- Mount cameras 8 to 10 feet high, angled down, out of easy reach
- Avoid pointing cameras directly into the sun or at neighbors’ windows
Understand subscriptions and storage
Many brands charge a monthly fee to save recorded video in the cloud. Others store video locally on a memory card or base station. Decide up front whether you want cloud recording, so there are no surprise charges later.
Lock down your account
Use a strong, unique password and turn on two-factor authentication for your camera app. This keeps strangers from accessing your video.
